The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a universally recognized neurological assessment tool designed to objectively evaluate a person's level of consciousness following acute brain injury or other conditions affecting brain function. It is primarily used by medical professionals, including paramedics, emergency physicians, and critical care nurses, across various clinical settings from pre-hospital to intensive care units. The GCS assigns numerical scores based on three key indicators: Eye Opening, Verbal Response, and Motor Response. These individual scores are summed to provide a total GCS score, ranging from 3 (deep unconsciousness) to 15 (fully awake). This standardized scoring system offers a rapid, reliable, and consistent method for assessing neurological status, facilitating clear communication among healthcare providers, monitoring changes over time, and guiding clinical management decisions.
