About Injury Severity Score (ISS)

The Injury Severity Score (ISS) is a well-established anatomical scoring system used to provide a comprehensive measure of trauma severity. Developed for medical professionals, particularly trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and researchers, the ISS integrates injury data across six defined body regions: Head/Neck, Face, Chest, Abdomen, Extremity/Pelvic Girdle, and External. It operates by identifying the three most severely injured body regions, each assigned an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score, and then summing the squares of these three highest AIS scores. This methodology yields a score ranging from 0 to 75. The ISS is invaluable for standardized injury classification, predicting outcomes, guiding resource allocation, and facilitating epidemiological studies and quality improvement initiatives in trauma care.
